Broken Sundowns

Amy is a free spirit girl, that comes from a place where is always sunny and children run around in the sprinklers. She doesn’t see anything else in the world that is worth while besides making art. Here is an interview that I made with her.

1. How did your will to take pictures start?

When I was in grade school I had this really cool hippy teacher. She had black, purple and green dreadlocks. She decided to start up a photography class for the gifted art students, so I was offered to join. We used to walk around our campus taking photos of flowers and logs, and everyone would use the macro function. I continued to take photos of nature and things even after I finished school. But it was when I saw Lara Jade's photos in a magazine that I decided I wanted to do portaits. It opened up a whole new world for me.

2. What inspires you?

Everything. Leaves blowing in the wind. When light reflects and causes this rainbow flare. Walking in the moonlight. The smallest things. Sometimes I'm just inspired to express an emotion, or create a concept. All the ugly things in the world inspire me greatly aswell. It's why I started the series Consumerism.

3. What do you do besides photographing?

A lot of my time is consumed by school and work. I only have Sunday off. It gets hard to do anything after school because I get so exhausted. I like to read and write. I'm working on a novel. I also love to sketch and paint, but I don't do that as often as I should. I do a fair bit of music at school and at home, I play piano and guitar and I want to learn the cello, the sitar and the harp.

4. Who are your favourite photographers and why.

I have lots of photostreams saved in my favourites. I look through them often. Il just name a couple for now:
Brooke Shaden for obvious reasons :)
hannahheartless for morbidity and self expression
Jenn Violetta for turning your nightmares into images
Kanelongden for colour and sunlight
Olivia Bee for making me smile
Lissy Elle for fantasy
paper.lilies for beauty in youth
hui+ for beauty in small things
Sofia Ajram for mystical themes
and Alison Scarpulla because shes my favourite :)

5. Do you use a program to edit your photos?

Yes, I use GIMP 2.6. It is free from the internet. I really should learn to use photoshop, but I have never gotten around to it.

6. How do the idea for a new photo comes to your mind?

Well, first I think about where I will go to take the photographs, what the location is like. Then I will think about what kind of feeling I want the photo to present, if it's a postive or negative emotion. Some times I have no idea's whatsoever and simply improvise with what I have.

7. Almost all of your pictures are in the nature. Does it have any special meaning to you?

It does. For me, I feel our society has lost it's connection with the earth. It has become too materialistic. Nobody appreciates how beautiful it is anymore. I find that people live inside their heads too much. I would love to live in a culture like the native americans or aboriginals of australia because they live how we are suppost to live. Also, I live opposite a park so I am constantly going there to do photographs.

8. You wear such lovely clothes. Where do you shop?

Well, I don't shop often. Maybe 8 times a year if I'm lucky. I like white dresses and floral things. People say I wear the same thing in my photographs all the time haha!I suppose If I wanted clothes I would go to an op shop, or some crazy hippy shop. I don't really like chain stores.

9. What's the meaning of the name Broken Sundowns?

When I was 13 I was obsessed with the song Werewolf by Cocorosie. When I first made my Flickr I was stuck with what name I would have, so I just used one of the first lines of Werewolf which is:
broken sundown, fatherless showdown.

10. Tell me: a music, a movie, a book and a quotation

Music: Mayonaise by Smashing Pumpkins. I recently went to their concert and it was amazing, but they didn't play Mayonaise. My friend and I were shouting "play mayonasie!" but Billy Corgan just looked at us and said "No."

Movie: Pans Labyrinth. Such an amazing spanish film. I draw so much inspiration from the fantasy aspect of it.

Book: I'm currently reading The Spirit Molecule - The biology of near death and mystical experiences by Rick Strassman. It is so interesting.

Quotation: la tristesse durera toujours
It means 'the sadness will last forever'. It was Vincent Van Gogh's last words.

Andar sob a luz do luar. As menores coisas.

e Alison Scarpulla porque ela é minha favorita:)

8. Você usa roupas adoráveis. Onde você as compra?

9. Qual é o significado do nome Broken Sundowns?

Broken sundown, fatherless showdown

Música: Mayonaise do Smashing Pumpkins.

Filme: O Labirinto do Fauno.

Livro: Eu estou atualmente lendo The Spirit Molecule - A biologia de quase morte e experiências místicas do Rick Strassman. É muito interessante.

Citação: “ La tristesse durera toujours”
Significa: “ A tristeza durará para sempre” Foram as últimas palavras de Vincent Van Gogh.
