Vanessa Paxton

Vanessa is a sweet born and raised in Jamaica girl. Currently living in Canada, she studies at Ryerson University for Photography Studies and has always been the artsy one in her family. Her pictures are like a fairy tale, full of colors and butterflies. One more beautiful than another. Here is the interview that I made with her.

1. How did you discover your passion for photography?

It was after I stopped painting that I started to take up with photography, that I know for sure. The first time I picked up a camera was as a documentary medium (using film), to document all of the things I would be leaving behind when I left Jamaica. But it wasn't until years later when I had access to a library of digital cameras that I really got into it. This was in grade 11, and my photography teacher had all the students make Flickr account. I guess from there the competition helped us all grow and discover what talents we had.

2. Where do you seek inspiration?

I seek technique inspiration from Flickr and other well known photographers, but I draw concept inspiration from everywhere. Sometimes I'll brainstorm with friends, or I'll get an idea from a book I'm reading, music I'm listening to. Sometimes it's just a funny thought in my head that needs to be created, or something I'm feeling that can only be given justice through photography. If you haven't noticed already I'm terrible with words so a photograph is my replacement for what I can't say naturally.

3. Who takes the pictures that you model?

I still take the picture. I have a remote.

4. Do you often use photoshop?

Of course. Photoshop is the darkroom of the new age photographer, isn't it? ;)

5. What camera do you use?Any light equipment?

I own the Canon Rebel XTi, so that's my primary camera. But when I can I like to you the 5D Mark II. During school I have access to all sorts of lighting equipment but I only own a single flash that I use as a fill. I prefer natural light.

6. Among the pictures you've taken, do you have a favourite one?

It's hard to play favourites because it changes all the time. The one that I may have loved a week/month ago can change to be the one that NEEDS to be deleted asap. Currently my favorite is:  Butterfly Catcher

7. How do you create a nice atmosphere when taking pictures of others? And if the person is very shy, what do you do?
You're assuming I create a nice atmosphere. I'm hoping I do, but that's something you'd have to ask my models. I haven't really had a very shy person model for me, unless I'm completely oblivious to the fact that they were shy. Which is possible.

8. Has it ever happened some crazy thing when you were shooting?

Other than my sets falling down or me getting hurt tripping over one thing or another, not really. Or do you mean have I ever caught anything crazy while shooting? Sometimes I'll get lucky, like in Jamaica earlier this month I was shooting with my instax and caught a butterfly flying away from a flower right into my frame. But that's hardly crazy to anyone else but me.

9. Who are your favourite photographers?

I have three on Flickr that I keep going back to: Lissy Elle, Kane Longden and Rosie Hardy. Despite the whole Rosie Hardy plagiarism and rise to fame through Flickr-love fiasco, I still think she creates really sweet pieces. I found Kane Longden through Rosie and fell in love with his approach as well. Lissy Elle blew me away with the progress she made on her 365 and ever since then I've been hooked. All her pieces are so original and well executed. Other photographers that I really enjoy include: Joshua Hoffine, Eugenio Recuenco, Zena Holloway, and, Denise Olivier.

10. Do you have any life philosophy?
“He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how.”
Nietzsche

11. I've noticed that you like the blue color a lot. It has a meaning to you or you just like it?

I think it's because I'm obsessed with blue skies or maybe because I don't get enough of them. In Canada during the winter we're so starved of the color blue so that's probably why it tends to creep into my photos.

12. Tell me: a music, a book, a movie.

Music: The Ladder – Andrew Belle

Book: The Bronze Horseman - by Paullina Simons

Movie: Sunshine – directed by Danny Boyle

3. Quem tira as fotos para as quais você posa?

Eu mesma as tiro. Tenho um controle remoto.

5. Qual câmera você usa? Algum equipamento de luz?

Eu tenho a Canon Rebel XTi, minha câmera primária.

Atualmente, a minha favorita é: Butterfly Catcher

12. Diga-me:
- Uma música: The Ladder – Andrew Belle
